Breast reduction in Zurich – for a lighter and harmoniously proportioned breast

Very large or heavy breasts can cause physical strain and may be perceived as disproportionate. A breast reduction specifically reduces the volume and reshapes the breasts. Dr. Peter Dietz will provide you with a personalized consultation in Zurich to discuss your options and realistic results.

When is breast reduction surgery recommended?

Breast reduction surgery may be appropriate if very large or heavy breasts cause persistent discomfort or are perceived as a burden in daily life. Often, the primary considerations are not just aesthetic concerns but also physical limitations.

Common reasons for breast reduction surgery may include:

  • Back, neck, or shoulder pain
  • Pressure marks caused by bra straps
  • Skin irritation in the underbust crease
  • Restrictions on Sports and Physical Activity
  • Difficulties in choosing the right clothes or bras
  • The desire for a breast size that better suits one's own body proportions

Whether breast reduction surgery is appropriate in an individual case depends, among other things, on the initial breast size, tissue distribution, skin quality, and personal expectations. You can find out what other breast surgery options are available in our overview of breast surgeries in Zurich.

Breast Reduction Costs in Zurich

The desire for breast reduction surgery often develops over a long period of time - especially when large, heavy breasts become an increasing burden in daily life. This makes it all the more important to know exactly which treatment is appropriate and what costs you can expect before undergoing the procedure.

The cost of a breast reduction is typically around CHF 13,000. The exact price depends on the extent of the procedure, the amount of tissue to be removed, the incision technique, and the complexity of the surgery. The cost includes the surgical procedure, anesthesia, and medical care related to the procedure.

During your in-person consultation, we’ll take the time to discuss your wishes, your concerns, and your individual situation. Together, we’ll discuss the extent to which your breast volume should be reduced and which surgical technique is best suited for this. You’ll then receive a transparent estimate of the expected costs.

What factors influence the cost?

The exact cost of a breast reduction depends primarily on the following factors:

  • Initial size and characteristics of the breast
  • Extent of the necessary tissue removal
  • Required cut pattern
  • Duration and Scope of the Surgical Procedure
  • Selected surgical site

Breast reduction - the most important facts in brief

Indications for breast reduction surgery

Breast reduction surgery may be appropriate for a variety of reasons. Often, it’s not just about the size of the breasts, but about feeling more comfortable in one’s own body and less restricted in daily life. The key factors are always the individual’s specific situation and which result best suits their body proportions.

PHYSICAL DISCOMFORT CAUSED BY HEAVY BREASTS

Large, heavy breasts can put a constant strain on the body. Typical symptoms include tension or pain in the neck, shoulders, and back, as well as pressure marks from bra straps.

Reducing breast volume and weight can alleviate physical strain. The extent to which the breasts can be reduced and the most appropriate shape are determined on an individual basis, taking into account the patient’s anatomical characteristics.

LIMITATIONS IN SPORTS AND DAILY LIFE

For some women, having very large breasts is particularly noticeable during physical activity. Exercise can be uncomfortable or difficult, and even everyday activities can be affected by the weight and movement of the breasts.

Breast reduction surgery can help you gain greater freedom of movement and make your daily life more comfortable. The goal is to achieve a breast size that blends as naturally as possible with your body’s proportions.

REDUCE SKIN IRRITATION AND PRESSURE SORES

Recurring skin irritation, redness, or pressure marks can develop under heavy breasts, particularly in the underbust crease. Bra straps that dig into the skin can also be uncomfortable.

Reducing volume and weight can help alleviate strain on these areas. Whether and to what extent this can improve existing symptoms will be assessed during a personal consultation.

MORE HARMONIOUS BODY PROPORTIONS

In addition to physical discomfort, the desire for more balanced body proportions can also be a reason for breast reduction surgery. Very large breasts can appear disproportionately large in relation to the shoulders, waist, and hips, making it difficult to choose clothing or underwear.

Therefore, the planning process does not focus solely on how much tissue can be removed. Rather, the key consideration is which breast size and shape best complements the overall body image while also coming as close as possible to the patient’s personal expectations. If, in addition to size, sagging of the breasts is the primary concern, a breast lift may also be an option.

Further details on breast reduction

The approach taken depends, on the one hand, of course, largely on the patient’s expectations regarding her new breasts, and, on the other hand, on the existing conditions, the elasticity of the skin, the amount of existing glandular tissue, the degree of ptosis (i.e., sagging of the breast), and any breast asymmetry.

If there are significant differences between the two breasts, these can be taken into account when planning the surgery. You can learn more about this on our page on breast asymmetry.

During a detailed, very personal consultation, the patient’s expectations must be weighed against the medically and surgically achievable results, and the surgeon must determine the optimal approach to achieving a new, firm, and aesthetically pleasing bust. The postoperative care guidelines are the same as those for breast augmentation.

The surgical incision depends on the chosen surgical technique, the breast size, the existing breast volume, the width of the breast base and the individual skin condition. As a rule, the incision is made around the nipple and vertically downwards to the inframammary fold.

For more extensive reductions, an additional transverse incision is required in the lower breast fold. Tissue and skin are removed from the lower part of the breast. You should not generally rely on a scar-saving surgical technique, as this does not always achieve an optimal breast shape.

It is often better to accept a slightly wider scar in exchange for a well-proportioned bust. After all, the scars from the operation fade after just a few months and often only a thin line remains, which an unknowing observer will not notice. In any case, the surgeon will try to keep the unavoidable incisions as small and inconspicuous as possible so that they are concealed even by a skimpy bikini.

Real complications are very rare with this procedure. However, infections or postoperative bleeding are possible events that require more intensive follow-up care.

During the healing process, there may be sensory disturbances, both hypo- and hypersensitivity in the nipple area, which usually subside quickly. In extremely rare cases, a circulatory problem during the healing phase can lead to hardening of the tissue or changes in the pigmentation of the nipple. Correction of widened scars may be necessary in rare cases if the patient is predisposed to this.

After the surgery, we’ll apply an elastic latex bandage to help keep the breast in shape. After 2–3 days (following the first bandage change), you should wear a well-fitting sports bra; this should be worn day and night for 3 weeks, and then only during the day for another 3 weeks.

After a short recovery period, you can return to your everyday life, and we carry out short-term accompanying wound healing checks in our practice.

The operation is quite lengthy and requires highly competent preparation of the tissue and conscientious hemostasis. The skin is also readapted in several layers and is time-consuming.

As with any cosmetic procedure, the cost of surgery depends on the type and extent of the operation. These are made up of the anesthesia fee, the duration of the operation and our fee note. We will discuss these costs with you in detail beforehand and a fixed fee will be set, regardless of how long the procedure ultimately takes. This allows you to calculate precisely. As this is an elective procedure, the costs are not usually covered by health insurance.

The postoperative behavioral rules are the same as for a breast lift or breast augmentation.

Price for breast reduction surgery:

from CHF 13,000

The cost of an initial on-site consultation is CHF 250. This amount can be credited towards your treatment if it takes place within 6 months. If you do not show up for the bindingly agreed initial appointment, a cancellation fee of CHF 150 will be charged.

The following rule applies to agreed surgery appointments: In the case of planned and scheduled operations, it is often not possible for Medicine&Beauty AG to find a replacement patient in the event of a cancellation. Due to these planning difficulties, it is only possible to cancel surgery appointments free of charge if this is done in writing by the customer at least 7 days (calendar days) in advance by e-mail or WhatsApp.

For cancellations made less than 7 calendar days before the planned operation, the customer will be charged 50% of the previously agreed operation costs. Appointments canceled by Medicine&Beauty AG for health, medical or technical reasons cannot be refunded or compensated. An alternative date will be offered at no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Reduction in Zurich

Many questions don't arise until you're seriously considering breast reduction surgery. Here you'll find brief answers to common questions about the procedure.

There is no specific body weight requirement for breast reduction surgery. The key factors are the individual’s specific circumstances, breast size, any symptoms, and overall health. Maintaining a stable body weight as much as possible is beneficial for planning the procedure and achieving long-term results.

Since breast reduction surgery is often considered an elective procedure, the costs are generally not covered by health insurance. However, in exceptional cases where there is a medical justification, an individual review may be possible. Therefore, you should always clarify whether the costs will be covered directly with your health insurance provider before the procedure.

After surgery, you may experience pain, a feeling of tightness, and increased sensitivity. The severity of these symptoms varies from person to person. These symptoms can usually be managed with appropriate pain medication.

There is no fixed upper age limit. Physical development, overall health, and individual suitability for surgery are more important than age. For very young patients, breast development should be as complete as possible.

Breast reduction surgery can affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed, as the procedure may involve breast glandular tissue and milk ducts. Whether breastfeeding will be possible later depends, among other things, on the surgical technique chosen and the individual’s initial condition.

A specific bra cup size alone does not determine whether a breast reduction is appropriate. Key factors include body proportions, breast weight, any physical discomfort, and personal comfort. To find out which other factors - such as weight, BMI, and overall health - play a role, check out our guide on the requirements for breast reduction surgery.

Yes. Pregnancies, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, and the natural aging process can affect the shape and volume of the breasts even after a breast reduction.
